Chapter Seventeen

They had a bird shifter acting as their scout. This group was even more diverse than I’d thought.

“We’ll shift,” Jade said, and took her mate’s huge hand.

Rosemary spread her wings. “Or you can let Levi and me handle it since we don’t have to change forms like you two do.” She took to the sky as Levi shadowed into his demon form.

Jade’s chest heaved, and her nostrils flared. “Your friend has a horrible attitude.”

“She doesn’t mean to come off that way.” Killian rubbed his temples. “Angels are very blunt and factual. Believe me, if she wanted to insult you, there would be no question about it.”

Jade placed a hand on her small waist. “I wasn’t questioning if she was.”

The falcon cawed and flapped its wings erratically. If I hadn’t known better, I’d have thought it was having a heart attack.

“We can talk about all this later.” Sterlyn turned in the direction we’d come from. “This threat shouldn’t be ignored. The falcon is uneasy, and with what we’ve experienced, something is coming.”

“But if it’s human…” Lillith started.

Chad cut her off, “They are worthy adversaries. They kidnapped me, and I went through intense training. These humans have weapons, dart guns, and training of their own.”

He left out the part about being a silver wolf, which was for the best. Though our heritage wasn’t a secret anymore, that didn’t mean we should provide that information up front. Besides, there was something different about Sadie, and she wasn’t sharing that information with us, either.

Trust took time.

“We could’ve shifted and been in the sky by now,” Jade growled, and stomped her foot like a horse.

Levi floated toward us, but it wasn’t as if the others could see.

“Levi’s on his way down,” I said to be reassuring, but I regretted it as soon as the words were out.

Egan stared skyward and squinted. “How do you know?”

There was no getting around the reason; they’d all know if I lied. “I can see him in his shadow form.”

He homed in on me and tilted his head. This man was intelligent, but there was no fear or judgment in his eyes. Rather, it was curiosity.

Jewel, Killian warned.

This time, he had every right to talk to me that way. I’m sorry. It slipped out.

Levi landed next to me and changed back into his human form. He normally didn’t do that with us, but with the newcomers, he must not have wanted to startle them.

“There’s a group of wolves heading this way.” Levi frowned and tugged at the hem of his black shirt. “There don’t appear to be any humans, but I’m not sure if that’s a good thing.”

“Of course there would be more than that pack working with the humans.” Griffin’s nose wrinkled, and the breeze blew, ruffling the sides of his hair. The longer gelled section on top stayed firmly in place.

Emmy sneered. “What the hell is wrong with this world where people willingly turn against their own kind?”
